Reducing parental conflict

There are different kinds of conflict in relationships. Not all conflict is damaging, but it’s important to remember that the way it is displayed, how often it happens and how conflict is dealt with can all have a negative impact on children.

What is ‘parental conflict’?

Some arguing and conflict between parents is a normal part of everyday life. But, when that conflict is intense, happens often and is not properly resolved, it can have a very negative impact on children’s mental health and long-term life chances.

Conflict between parents can become damaging in many ways, such as:

  • unfinished arguments
  • not talking to each other
  • not respecting each other

Conflict can affect children in all types of family relationships, including:

  • parents living together
  • parents who are separated or divorced
  • biological and step parents
  • other family members who have a parenting role
  • foster and adoptive parents
